May 29 – County Roads 308/319 from Casper to Prospect Hill (Oregon Trail Road) The focus for this trek will be on trail preservation to coincide with celebrating Wyoming’s Historic Preservation month. Spencer Pelton, Wyoming State Archaeologist will present after the trek at 1 p.m. at the NHTIC on current trail preservation.
June 5 – Rocky Ridge A notable area along the pioneer trail by many trail diarists, Rocky Ridge was difficult to traverse and layered with multiple rocky outcrop formations where in 1856, a rescue party reached the Willie Handcart Company in blinding snow.
July 17 – Trail sites near Fort Laramie and Guernsey, WY Noted sites will include pioneer graves, trail ruts and markers, and Register Cliff.
August 28 – Seminoe Cutoff A major branch of the Oregon Trail, the Seminoe Cutoff allowed pioneers to avoid several crossings of the Sweetwater River, as well the difficult climb up Rocky Ridge.
September 25 – Independence Rock and Devil’s Gate Come explore and experience the noted landmarks of Independence Rock and Devil’s Gate as pioneer stories come to life!
All trail treks depart at 8:00 a.m. from the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center parking lot (unless otherwise noted): 1501 North Poplar Street, Casper, WY 82601 • (307) 261-7700 Please bring sack lunches, drinks, sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothing and apparel. Be prepared for inclement weather throughout the day. Transportation to these sites will not be provided and carpooling is encouraged! 4wheel drive and high clearance vehicles are recommended.
