“Mysteries of the Trails” is the title of a temporary exhibit at the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center.
The exhibit will run from October 22 through November 29.
On July 26, 1865, Sergeant Amos J. Custard and 21 soldiers under his command engage with Cheyenne,
Lakota, Arapaho, and Sioux warriors in what would be called the Battle of Red Buttes. Hopelessly
outnumbered, Custard and his men lost the battle and their lives in defending five supply wagons. Three days
later, 21 soldiers were buried in a trench, but today the location remains unknown. Discover the present day
search with cadaver dogs in “Where have all the soldiers gone?”
Stop in at the National Historic Trails Interpretive starting Tuesday, October 22, during off-season hours, from
9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Admission is free to all. For more information call 307-261-7780.
