Military Encampment with special event

The gentlemen of the Colorado and Lobo Mess (Daniel Mattern and friends) will host a military encampment with special events on June 22nd starting at 8:00 AM.

Three miles after crossing into Goshen County, one can find the resting place of 25-year-old Charles Bishop. Cholera had taken its toll on this young man and his mess mates suspected him of drinking slough water two days earlier before his death – a danger many had cautioned against. On July 8, Charles was dead and out of respect for his service in the Mexican War, the company accorded Bishop a military funeral with uniform-adorned members carrying his body to a nearby ridge for burial.

The days events will include cooking and reenactment of life for civilians on the California Trail. Special event at 8:00 PM will be the reenactment of the death and burial of Charles Bishop. The encampment will also be in full swing on Sunday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
